The series completes itself with a look at the grandaddy of them all, Shaun Monson's 'Earthlings'. Although food has been the main focus of the series, this documentary also looks at the use of animals as pets (even that isn't always pretty), for clothes, for entertainment and finally for scientific experiments. Shaun's 2015 sequel 'Unity' is in the show notes below.

Antony also mentions a couple of Australian documentaries that are even harder to watch than 'Earthlings' (if that's even possible), and offers some final statements and some attempt at a conclusion.

To gain a better industry of how and why this nasty business is allowed to happen, a recommended companion piece is the excellent documentary 'The Corporation' and indeed the previous LALO episode on it (see show notes for both). We really owe it to ourselves and the animals who largely live miserable, hellish lives before suffering painful and brutal deaths, to make the effort in the ultimate information age to inform ourselves of the real situation. Unfettered capitalism cannot be allowed to run riot without resistance.

Do I recommend watching the documentaries and other video footage available? I'm going to say yes but please proceed with caution and I would actively discourage viewing them if you feel in a vulnerable or depressive state because they have the power to make you question whether true humanity exists and how we can possibly behave in this kind of way to innocent, defenceless beings (once again, I would also include some humans in this).

As the saying goes, 'once you've seen it, you can't unsee it', and as Ed Winters aka Earthling Ed says at the end of 'Land of Hope And Glory', 'you can never again say you didn't know'. Continuing with this most upsetting but vitally important topic, Antony completes his look at 'Land of Hope And Glory', discusses the big myth about tradition and change and then switches to a new documentary called 'The Dying Trade'.

This film was made by Jack Hancock, who gives the issue a new spin by exploring his relationship with his father, who just happens to be a man-and-boy slaughterhouse worker (Antony avoids euphemistic words like 'abattoir' throughout this series). Along the way, Jack meets a Holocaust survivor and such legends as Temple Grandin and Gail Eisnitz.

As Upton Sinclair famously said, 'it's difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on him not understanding it'. 

This second part ends with testimonies from some rather brave slaughterhouse workers, who are largely victims themselves working in a stressful and terrifying environment which is, as Shaun Monson puts it, 'both a kitchen and a toilet'.

Acting as a ‘gentle’ introduction to what will be a very challenging upcoming series of episodes, Antony offers some observations and questions on a sprawling range of topics, mostly focused on the harsh realities of this glorious world we inhabit.

How much do we want to know about what really goes on in our name, and what we inadvertently or actively support? What do, or should, we feel about the massive inequalities of power and resources that exist, and the exploitation of powerless humans and even more powerless animals?

The encounter between Piers Morgan and Russell Brand in April was, if nothing else, compelling and revealing. Despite their very different personae, they have had strangely similar journeys through some of the darker aspects of media and come out the other side, each now positioning himself as part of ‘alternative media’, whatever that exactly means, while still in contact with the mainstream.

Antony breaks down a quite bizarre conversation, with both protagonists wrestling for control and trying to direct things into the areas they would prepare to discuss. There are a few truth bombs detonated here, which many alt. media commentators seem to have missed as they focus only on a few moments of dead air.

For our final episode of the year, we look at a yuletide classic from a philosophical and existential angle, gently challenging the fairytale ‘happy ending’ and looking at other inconsistencies within what is close to being a perfect Hollywood tale of darkness rescued by light and hope. George Bailey and the other characters are archetypes that stay just the right side of being clichés, but there may well be more going on than meets the eye…

We complete our journey into Axel Rudakubana’s darkness with a look at some of the wealth of information uncovered by the recently-completed first phase of The Southport Inquiry, which has taken place at Liverpool Town Hall.

Special attention is given to the testimonies of Gary Poland, the unfortunate taxi driver who delivered Axel to the place of his atrocity, Axel’s brother Dion and their parents Alphonse and Laetitia.

The timeline is as imperfect as the system that sought to deal with a severe case of a ‘problem child’, as we jump around key events and try to make sense of a 5-year period in the Rudakubana family’s lives that saw an apparently well-adjusted 12 year old with a passion for acting and Doctor Who transform into a monster (as his father admits he now is).

The episode ends with some final thoughts from the Inquiry chairman as we try to build a brighter future

We conclude our latest follow-up episodes on Axel Rudakubana and his darkest of deeds on a summer’s day in Southport last July. Following on from episode 57, we delve further into the dark world of Axel Rudakubana and the horrific attack(s) he perpetrated in sunny Southport last July. This time, Antony provides more details of the sometimes bizarre events surrounding the attack (without dwelling on the gory details), and also the media framing of the killer and the handling of this shocking ongoing ‘story’.

On this latter point, we are aided by a few paragraphs from Alain De Botton’s ‘The News: A User’s Manual’, which looks at the strange and compulsive relationship most of us have with the telling to us of the apparently most important events in a vast and complex world.

The Southport Inquiry is currently taking place in Liverpool, and part 2 will reveal more details and context from the wealth of information that the inquiry is providing on a daily basis.

This is a rare true crime episode, trying (in vain) to understand the horrific crimes of Axel Rudakubana in Southport last summer. There is also some discussion of the Lucy Letby case and brief mention of John Lennon’s reviled killer Mark David Chapman, in terms of the psychology of crime and society's relationship to it.

Completing our foray into advertising, mostly using Antony’s talk on Julian Charles’s excellent podcast ‘The Mind Renewed’ back in 2015, we dive deeper into Edward Bernays’s work and then segue into the darker underbelly of the craft, including the engineering of a military coup and the truly egregious and unethical snaring of innocent hearts and minds involved in advertising to children. On a lighter note we mention a few points made in Neil Sanders’s very entertaining presentation called ‘The Art of Creating Reality’ (see show notes).

From there we talk about an excellent short video called ‘Your Lifestyle Has Already Been Designed’ (see show notes again) and how we have been trapped into a certain way of life. There are a few words from Antony at the end of the talk on this subject, and Antony and Julian offer some advice for combatting the controlling force of advertising.

Following on from the propaganda multi-parter at the end of last year, this time we dive into a topic with quite a lot of overlap, namely advertising. The bulk of the content comes from a talk that Antony did on Julian Charles’s excellent podcast ‘The Mind Renewed’ back in 2015.

Despite the time that has passed since the talk, most of the general thrust of advertising has been in place for a long time so we are confident that the information is still relevant and hopefully useful.

In Part 1 we talk about what advertising is and some of the techniques employed by advertisers to sell products. Towards the end of this part, we begin to discuss the work of Edward Bernays, ‘the most influential man you’ve never heard of’ (more on him later).

And so we finally reach the end of this podcast odyssey with the longest episode of the 4-part series...

The main topics here are fame (linking neatly to LALO episode 40) and the interestingly similar trajectory it shares with money in terms of how its escalation affects -or doesn't affect- a person's happiness, and then the granddaddy of all topics- death. There’s also some talk about mindfulness meditation here, offering another callback to a previous LALO episode.

Once again Derren Brown turns to some ancient wisdom to illustrate his points in the book, but there are also some fascinating modern takes on fame, death and a few other things. As always your humble host weighs in with his thoughts too, as well as offering a slightly unusual greeting of the season.

It's hard to summarise the many possible takeaways from a 6-hour  analysis of a 500-page book, but with my life coach’s hat on I can only strongly suggest a focus on excellence and full attention to tasks, including the tricky one of living itself.

We also need to understand that we are telling ourselves stories all the time, often about events that we have little or no control over and with little evidence to back up our conclusions. Life is hard but can actually be far simpler than we make it if we can limit these stories and try to relax and live with grace and compassion, both for ourselves and for others.

The next part of this epic journey through Derren Brown’s book ‘Happy: Why More or Less Everything Is Absolutely Fine’ and the general topic of happiness takes us further into fate and accepting the downsides of life while finding its way back to some core themes of the book. These include our construction of narratives with little evidence, catastrophising and ‘mind-reading’ (ours, not Derren’s!).

We also look at those old enemies anger, fear & guilt, with a little help from our friends the Stoics, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius and others. There’s a lot more along the way and I humble believe you will get a lot out of this if you listen with attention and an open mind and try to digest the occasionally complex but always accessible ideas in the book and the episode.

Inspired by the recent U.S. Open tennis tournament, here’s my take on the grand slam singles finals won by Coco Gauff and Novak Djokovic, the G.O.A.T. debate and the sport and its culture in general. From here, we look at two things that are inextricably linked to top-level tennis and sport- media and fame. There’s also discussion of a very important argument put forward in the seminal 1974 tennis/sports psychology book, ‘The Inner Game of Tennis’.

David Blaine is known around the world and a magician and illusionist. However, he has also had a parallel life doing endurance stunts, apparently for real without illusion (though some believe otherwise).

This episode deals with my personal favourite of these stunts, when he tested the limits of human endurance, both physical and psychological, living in a plexiglass box for 44 days in London in 2003 with only water to sustain him.

One of the ironic things about this stunt is that he was both alone in isolation but was also surrounded by a daily throng of visitors who kept him going as he grew weaker, and kept him entertained as he watched the world go by…

The story of R.M.S. Titanic and its unfortunate fate seems to have everything, both good and bad, in terms of how society views itself, its apparently superior relationship to nature and people’s relationships to their fellow man. This is a historical event but it’s also a story full of drama and human interest, and one that has been subject to constant revision in the 110 years since the ship sank.

The story of R.M.S. Titanic and its unfortunate fate seems to have everything, both good and bad, in terms of how society views itself, its apparently superior relationship to nature and people’s relationships to their fellow man. This is a historical event but it’s also a story full of drama and human interest, and one that has been subject to constant revision in the 110 years since the ship sank.

Antony reads his own longform essay regarding the maiden voyage and sinking of the world's most famous ship, and there are interjections with further observations throughout.

Ordinary humans of all levels of means and status fight for their lives against the slow, inevitable creep of death…

In an edited version of what was originally a video podcast (link below), Antony and Luke Thompson dissect the seminal Canadian documentary written by law professor Joel Bakan and directed by Mark Achbar and Jennifer Abbott.

Although often run by people with decent intentions, the modern corporation, complete with its legally-determined 'rights of a person', has become a monster that seeks to devour all that stands in its own way while polluting the environment and often ruining lives. You may be shocked to hear the documentary's diagnosis of this legal monster, which we outline during the talk.

Some of the talking heads (including critics of the entity, corporation CEOs and everything in between) include Noam Chomsky, Michael Moore and Naomi Klein.

Yes Minister, which later became Yes Prime Minister, was a BBC sitcom that ran from the late 1970s to the late 80s. On one level it was an extremely well-scripted and funny comedy, but it also offered a very profound and only slightly exaggerated look at the very interesting but also rather dark and slightly insane way in which we and our lives are governed by those at the top of the power game.

Indeed, it seems to get more and more relevant as time goes on, and this podcast explores the various levels of the show and the way in which its message seems to have been somewhat lost in the comedy aspect of it.

This is mostly a solo effort from Antony but there is a coda included which includes 'spiritual brother' of this podcast Julian Charles of 'The Mind Renewed'
